England defensive approach is allowing India to make a comeback in the series !



After India was bowled out in first innings, England does not opt for follow-on, fearing they may have to bat in fourth innings. The approach seems logical but the way England approach their batting in the 2nd innings was clueless.

There was hardly any intent from the majority of batsman except Joe root and butler. Even when 8 wickets were down England preferred to keep batting without any positive intent allowing Indian team a comeback in the series.  Similarly in the first innings also England kept batting even after 2nd day until they were bowl out, showing no signs of declaration. Though the approach in the first innings can still be justified considering if England does not want to bat again in the match and make India physically and mentally drained. But the way England approached their 2nd innings with the bat was very hard to digest. Some said they are feared with Indian team especially the way Indian played in the gabba match and in general in the Australian series.

After a very defensive approach in the 2nd innings by England team and setting a target of 420 runs to get in 107 odd overs, England approach was even more defensive with the bowl, setting up the defensive field with 50 minutes left for the day. In the last over of the day when the batsman was looking to see off the day, Joe root had set up players in the boundary rope which is just very hard to digest for any cricket experts or fans as all were perplexed with the defensive tactics shown by England team, thus allowing India to make a comeback in the series by letting the pressure off India and putting themselves under pressure for getting 10 wickets in close to 107 overs with a defensive field. 

The simplest and more logical approach would have been setting aggressive fields and hence inciting Indian batsman to take a risk on a dry and dusty wicket of Chennai but England chooses the opposite route which no cricketing minds can understand the reasons behind it except being too scared of Indian after the recently concluded Indian tour of Australia.
